Ontario Electricity Market Overview

The Ontario Energy Market has been completely restructured over the past 2 decades.

The Natural Gas market was de-regulated in 1985, allowing consumers to benefit from fixed-rate contracts for their natural gas supply. Today, a majority of Ontario natural gas consumers elect to stabilize their natural gas rates rather than be subjected to the volatility of the marketplace.

More recently, the Electricity market has been de-regulated. Large commercial users of electricity are now paying market rates, and subsidies to residential and small business rates have been reduced.

Recent developments, including the decision by the Ontario government to close all of its coal-fired generating plants by 2009 seem to indicate that the recent upward trend in Electricity rates will continue.
