Understanding Your Hydro Bill
Most electricity consumers in Ontario now receive a standardized hydro bill which breaks the cost of electricity into four components. |
1. Electricity ChargeThe electricity charge is the only component of your hydro bill that is open to competition. For most consumers, this charge makes up 50% - 60% of the total bill.
Our Electricity Price Protection Plan allows you to stabilize this portion of your Hydro bill by locking in to a fixed service price for up to 5 years.

2. Delivery ChargeThe delivery charge consists of two main components:
- transmission costs - collected by Hydro One and the local utility to cover transmission costs from the generating plant to the local utility
- distribution costs - collected by the local utility to cover cost of infrastructure and customer service
|
3. Regulatory ChargesRegulatory charges consist of two main components:
- wholesale market service charge - 0.62 cents per kWh to cover cost of services provided by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) plus 0.1 cent per kWh to subsidize distribution costs to rural and remote areas of Ontario
- standard supply service charge - 25 cents per month to cover administrative costs for those customers who purchase their electricity directly from the utility. This charge does not apply to customers who have a contract with a licensed electricity retailer such as Canada Energy.
|
4. Debt Retirement ChargeA charge of 0.7 cents per kWh has been set by the Ontario Ministry of Finance to pay down the residual stranded debt of the former Ontario Hydro. |
